Change the Political Environment

Very often we ask the wrong question of people because we view things through the wrong lens.

The question is not will you or should you get involved in the politics in your country? The appropriate question is will you or should you get involved in the development of your country? If the answer to the second question is yes, as I assume it is for most people, then you need to participate actively in the fora and the avenues that will allow you to influence the development of your country.

In our system of governance, the political environment is an important forum for directing and determining the type and trajectory of development we will experience. Therefore, if, in your estimation, the current political environment is not facilitating the type of development you would like to see for your country, then change the political environment. Get busy and change it, do not leave it to its own devices.

Changing the political environment is not the same as changing the political party forming the government. It is deeper, more fundamental, more difficult and much more important. It is changing the boundaries within which the politics must be conducted. It is changing the standards for the actions and behaviors that will be tolerated and accepted within the political environment. It is changing the rules that govern how people engage with each other and with you in that environment. And, most importantly, it is changing and elevating the minimum levels of responsibility, accountability, reasonableness and transparency demanded of the people in that environment.

If you want to improve our development prospects and allow our country to be able to graduate finally from the frustrating cycles of inter-generational dependency that have stifled it for decades, then get involved and change our politics. This message is particularly important for and directed at our youth.

In the words of Margaret Meade: Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed it is the only thing that ever has.
