Another Hurricane Season - Be Prepared
The 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season starts officially in less than 3 weeks.
Have we learned any lessons from the devastation visited on our sister islands of Dominica, British Virgin Islands or Anguilla from the deadly 2017 hurricane season? Have we put in place any mechanisms or systems to prepare us to better cope with the impacts of a major storm?
Last week in Bonn, during climate change negotiations, a senior member of the Italian Government delegation, with whom I had negotiated for the €2.5 million grant for a state-of-the-art Hazard Early Warning System, came up to me and told me, with great disappointment, that my government had still not availed itself of this gift from his government. I responded that I remained hopeful that sometime, in the near future, the government of Saint Lucia would accept and commission this much-needed facility.
In the meantime friends, check on your property insurance and take all necessary precautions.
